Cancer patients of Kharkiv region buy about 2/3 necessary medicine for their own money now. As was reported on February 6 in the press center of the news agency "STATUS QUO" by chief doctor of the Kharkiv Regional Clinical Oncology Center Yuri Vinnik, it has been allocated about 13 million UAH from the state budget for chemotherapy for cancer patients in 2011. It covered 20% of demand. About UAH 1 million was allocated from local budgets for chemotherapy drugs, narcotic drugs and oxygen.
According to Yu.Vinnik, Kharkiv Oncology Center participates in clinical researches of drugs produced by leading pharmaceutical companies of the UK, the USA and Switzerland. Within these programs, patients receive free medicine. In 2011 about 100 people received free medicine. "Pharmaceutical companies introduce medicine in practice. Contract is concluded, groups are gathered in different countries that treat equally in order to compare the results. Pharmaceutical companies provide the best drugs for today as it no reason to introduce the worst. They are completely free for patients. Medical checkup is also paid by representatives of Pharmaceutical companies," said Yu.Vinnik. "Now I have people who stand in queue and ask to include them in this program because it is the only way. Cost of treatment by such drugs is a few thousand dollars every month," he added.
As Yu.Vinnik said, in order to participate in such programs, institutions must prove that they are able to provide the level of diagnosis and treatment that suits pharmacological company. Also participating in international clinical researches allows medical staff to improve. "Representatives of the institutions participating in the program attend 10-15 conventions a year in different countries where communicate and share experiences with international colleagues. We learn more about the updates before information about them is publishes," added Yu.Vinnik. According to him, at the next Congress of the ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) in Chicago (USA) will be presented results of researches of Kharkiv oncologists.
